Meet the Authors

Women have unprecedented opportunities in the 21st century.  But all this freedom can become its own prison. Women often try to be everything to everybody. Career, children, relationships, education make so many demands on their time they forget to take care of themselves.

After Me, You Come First is a practical guide to making choices. It discusses working women, working moms, stay at home moms, single parenting, child care and those who don’t have children.  It also addresses the increasing number of women in the Sandwich Generation who are caring for elderly parents while still raising their own families and working. It is a manual of self-care especially directed at women. The book shows you how being selfish can be a good and even necessary thing.

The authors Sara Armstrong and Lillian Redding bring a wealth of life experience to this subject.  They have experienced marriage, single parenting, loss, joy, pain, utter exhaustion and have learned how to say no without guilt.
Sara Armstrong joined the Peace Corps in 1966 and went to Uganda as a teacher.  She  married a Ugandan in 1968 and was launched on a journey through the terror of Idi Amin Dada. She had unique insight into the destruction of a prosperous and thriving nation. Her first book entitled The Shattered Pearl, which is an account of her ten years in Africa, was published in December 2001.

After returning from Uganda, she was widowed and was thrust  into the Sandwich Generation raising her two children and taking care of her aging parents. She helped to incorporate and served as the first Mayor of the Town of Shorter, Alabama when developers threatened her community. In 1986 Sara moved her family to California and married Bob Armstrong in 1992. After working in the financial industry Sara entered seminary at age 54 earning a Masters Degree in Religious Education. Then she developed several ministries of teaching and speaking in the United Methodist Church which led to the founding of Sara L Armstrong Enterprises in 2001.  Sara’s blended family consists of nine children, sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Widowed again in 2006, she relocated to Atlanta.

Co-author Lillian Redding is a self-made woman. She worked as an IT specialist for over fifteen years in corporate America. She has been a single career woman, working single parent, working married mom, stay at home mom and an entrepreneur.  She and husband Carl have three children ages two, four and eight.

Lillian has faced the challenge of balancing the demands of her career and her family responsibilities.  She has encountered financial, emotional and spiritual turmoil and has gained strength and wisdom from her experiences. Her keen observations and true life vignettes add a wonderful, humorous reality to the book.  Lillian’s passion is sharing her knowledge and empowering women not just to say no to others but to say yes to themselves and recognize that they must care for themselves first before they can care for others.

Lillian and Sara  operate Women of Authority, a division of Sara L Armstrong Enterprises, which provides speaking, training and consulting services.  Their passion is to help everyone, especially women, embrace each other without reservation, enable each other by sharing skills and experiences, and empower each other to set positive goals and take action.
